Standing Forward Fold mainly works quadriceps, iliopsoas; it stretches hamstrings, gastrocnemius, gluteus maximus, erector spinae; soleus stabilize.

Opening the 3D model…
Fold deeply from the hips to lengthen the back of the body: hamstrings, gastrocnemius, and erector spinae. Contracting the quadriceps helps the hamstrings release (reciprocal inhibition).
Muscles in this pose
Working (contracting): Quadriceps, Iliopsoas
Stretching: Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Gluteus maximus, Erector spinae, Multifidus, Quadratus lumborum, Trapezius
Stabilizing: Soleus
Why these muscles work or stretch
- Quadriceps · Working (contracting): Contracts so the hamstrings can release (reciprocal inhibition)
- Iliopsoas · Working (contracting): Draws the torso deeper into the hip fold
- Trapezius · Stretching: Upper fibers lengthen as the head hangs
Practice cues
- Hinge at the hips; don't round your upper back
- Engage your quadriceps to help your hamstrings release
- Relax your neck and let your head hang
Benefits
- Stretches the hamstrings, calves and erector spinae
- Improves flexibility in folding from the hip joints
- May help ease tension in the back and neck as the head hangs
- Trains the quadriceps to work so the hamstrings can release
Cautions / contraindications
- Avoid deep folding with an acute lumbar disc problem
- Use caution with uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma or retinal problems
- Go gently with low back pain or tight hamstrings: bend the knees generously
