Fire Log Pose (Double Pigeon) mainly works tibialis anterior, fibularis group, erector spinae; it stretches piriformis, deep hip rotators, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius; transversus abdominis stabilize.

Opening the 3D model…
Sit on the floor, bend the knees and lay one shin across the front of the body, parallel to the front edge of the mat. Stack the other shin on top so the top ankle rests just over the bottom knee and the top knee rests over the bottom ankle, the two shins piled like logs. Flex both feet, sit tall and rest the hands lightly on the floor beside the hips. The outer and back hips on both sides, especially the piriformis and deep rotators, lengthen strongly.
Muscles in this pose
Working (contracting): Tibialis anterior, Fibularis group, Erector spinae
Stretching: Piriformis, Deep hip rotators, Gluteus maximus, Gluteus medius, Adductors
Stabilizing: Transversus abdominis
Why these muscles work or stretch
- Tibialis anterior · Working (contracting): Flexes the feet
- Fibularis group · Working (contracting): Lifts the outer edges of the feet so they don't sickle, protecting the knees
- Erector spinae · Working (contracting): Keeps the spine upright
- Piriformis · Stretching: Main stretch; usually stronger in the top leg
- Gluteus maximus · Stretching: The hips flex and rotate outward
- Adductors · Stretching: The thighs open out to the sides
Practice cues
- Flex both feet to keep the knees safe
- Sit on a folded blanket if your back rounds or the top knee rides high
- If a knee hurts, fill the gap between the top knee and bottom ankle with a block, or sit cross-legged instead
Benefits
- Strongly stretches the glutes and deep hip rotators on both sides
- Improves hip external rotation, supporting seated meditation postures
- Builds endurance in the back muscles while sitting tall
Cautions / contraindications
- Avoid with a knee injury; tight hips send the twisting load into the knees
- Use caution with hip pain or sciatica
- Go gently with low-back pain; sit on a blanket so the back stays upright
Easier variations
- Put a block or folded blanket in the gap between the top knee and bottom ankle
- Sit on a folded blanket, or switch to Easy Pose
