Rock the Baby Pose anatomy
Rock the Baby Pose · Hindolasana · Tư thế đung đưa em bé
Rock the Baby Pose mainly works tibialis anterior (right), biceps brachii, erector spinae; it stretches piriformis (right), deep hip rotators (right), gluteus maximus (right), gluteus medius (right); multifidus, transversus abdominis, obliques stabilize.
Opening the 3D model…
Sit tall with the left leg straight forward or loosely bent as in a cross-legged seat. Bend the right knee, lift the right shin and cradle it: the right foot rests in the crook of the left elbow, the right knee in the crook of the right elbow, the hands clasped around the outside of the shin, which sits roughly parallel to the chest. Flex the right foot to protect the knee. Inhale to lift the chest with the spine upright; exhale, draw the shin closer and rock it gently from side to side, as if rocking a baby. The right hip is flexed and turned out, so the right glutes and deep external rotators, especially the piriformis, stretch; the back muscles keep the torso upright and the arms hold the leg. It prepares for Pigeon and Lotus. With knee pain, don't lift the shin as high and hold under the knee and the ankle instead of using the elbows.
Muscles in this pose
Working (contracting): Tibialis anterior (right), Biceps brachii, Erector spinae
Stretching: Piriformis (right), Deep hip rotators (right), Gluteus maximus (right), Gluteus medius (right), Hamstrings (left)
Stabilizing: Multifidus, Transversus abdominis, Obliques, Trapezius
Why these muscles work or stretch
- Tibialis anterior · Working (contracting): Flexes the right foot and keeps the ankle in line to protect the knee
- Biceps brachii · Working (contracting): The arms cradle the shin and draw it toward the chest
- Erector spinae · Working (contracting): Keeps the back upright
- Piriformis · Stretching: Main stretch, in the right buttock
- Gluteus maximus · Stretching: The right hip flexes and turns out
- Hamstrings · Stretching: Gently stretched when the left leg is straight
- Obliques · Stabilizing: Keep the torso steady as the shin rocks side to side
- Trapezius · Stabilizing: Lower fibers draw the shoulders down, away from the ears
Practice cues
- Flex the cradled foot; don't let it sickle inward
- Bring the shin to the chest rather than rounding down to the shin
- Rock from the hip, slowly and gently, shoulders away from the ears
Benefits
- Stretches the glutes and the deep external rotators of the hip, especially the piriformis
- Warms up the hip joint and prepares for Pigeon and Lotus
- Builds endurance in the back muscles that keep the spine upright
Cautions / contraindications
- Use caution with knee pain; flex the foot and don't lift the shin high
- Avoid with a hip injury or after a hip replacement
- Go gently with low back pain; sit on a folded blanket and don't round the back
Easier variations
- Sit on a folded blanket and cradle the shin lower, hands under the knee and ankle
- Sit with the back against a wall and the other leg straight
